Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation w ritten by a professional astronomer. 2021 November 10 IFRAME: [2]https://www.youtube.com/embed/25FfQ9MEQE8 Video of a Green Flash Video Credit & Copyright: [3]Paolo Lazzarotti Explanation: Many think it is just a [4]myth. Others think it is true but its cause isn't known. Adventurers [5]pride themselves on having seen it. It's a [6]green flash from the [7]Sun. The truth is the [8]green flash does exist and its cause is well understood. Just as the setting [9]Sun disappears completely from view, a last glimmer appears startlingly [10]green. The effect is typically visible only from locations with a low, distant horizon, and lasts just a few seconds. A [11]green flash is also visible for a rising [12]Sun, but takes better timing to spot. A dramatic [13]green flash was caught on video last month as the Sun set beyond the [14]Ligurian Sea from [15]Tuscany, [16]Italy. The second sequence in the [17]featured video shows the [18]green flash in real time, while the first is sped up and the last is in [19]slow motion. The [20]Sun itself does not turn partly green -- the effect is caused by layers of the [21]Earth's atmosphere acting like a [22]prism.
